The law in my state. Yes? Glock 23 approved in my state. A .40 S&W shot in at least a 4 inch barrel is considered a handgun where I live. Add to that the ability to shoot a .40 from a carbine and the joy increases with every other power you get from that long barrel.

Why do you say you can kill a deer with a .40 S&W around these parts? Because it's a self-perpetuating cycle. Law enforcement's best use may have been years ago, but that doesn't rule it out.

He is still a good social worker and (according to my state's hunting regulations) a good deer manager. Many law enforcement agencies use (or used to use) the .40 S&W, most notably the FBI before they reverted to 9mm. It lost popularity, but the .40 S&W still works well. Let's take a quick look at the cartridge in the gun.

Where did it come from? The .40 S&W came about when the FBI (which adopted the 10mm cartridge) asked Smith & Wesson to download some 10mm. The full 10mm is quite handy, so most users want something they can shoot well. S&W made the eponymous .40 by shortening the 10mm case and lowering it slightly, and it was adopted by the FBI. For more information on .40, read our rifle cartridge comparison.

It's fun, especially if you're a 40s fan. To be honest, I have never owned a .40 pistol or carbine. I have nothing against wheels - I shoot, shoot and reload 9mm in .45 ACP. I don't see the need to go with the .40 since I have a "bookcase" covered in caliber. I have always thought about getting a .40 and may do so in the future. If I do, the scrolling will die and the next arrow in the list will remain.

Hard To Beat: The Glock G40

Shooting a gun that distributes 400 (or more) pound-pounds of force will be impressive. This is true, especially if the gun is not big, it is easy to carry, and there are ten rounds or more in its magazine. I think it's a .40. Plus, there's a pretty big 9mm load out there now that delivers a pound of power that puts out about as many calories as Stewardess Twinkies.

Considering you can get as many 9mm bullets in a given hole as you can .40 bullets, that makes a difference. Take a look at the market leader in 9mm compact pistols, compared to many others - Glock's best-selling Model 19. This gun is the same as our Model 23, but can hold twice as much as a 23 with it standard magazine. 15 to 13 minutes.

Here we see the same difference when we look at 9mm and 40 caliber Glocks in 17 and 22 respectively. Model 17, Color 17 in Standard Magazine, Color 15.40 in Model 22.

It's not exactly an earthquake, but for some people it makes a difference. Some people carry 5-shot J-frame revolvers - don't seem to care about capacity. If you know where to put your photos, you can fill the lower capacity of the cartridge.

Best 10mm Glocks: Subcompact To Full Sized

Going the other way means that the .40 S&W magazine in your rifle will stop one or more times from an ACP weapon of similar size. Using the same comparison above, the full-size Glock in .40 holds two more rounds in a standard magazine than the full-size Glock, 15 to 13 in .45 ACP.

Being a .45 fan, that's not comforting news, but (as mentioned), it is what it is. The bottom line for me is that it is dangerous to have a 13 caliber .45 ACP in your gun, aside from magazines and other items in the chamber. Opportunity plays a big role in caliber selection. But the .40 is still a good choice. It sits between the 9mm and .45 ACP, and as Goldilocks knows, the middle can be the sweet spot.

One thing you can't help but think about with the 23 is the sight caliber. If you bought a .357 Sig barrel for your Model 23, you now have a gun in that caliber. Your .40 caliber magazine should work because the .357 Sig is based on a .40 case.

Worse, the follower configuration can cause feeding problems, so you get a magazine 32. Another caliber that can easily be converted to .23 is the 9mm. Buy a barrel conversion for a buck or two in a 19 magazine, and now you're dealing with a 9mm converted to a 19 marked "23" on the slide. So for the price of buying the original gun and the cost of the rear parts, you can have three guns.

The Three Caliber Glock Conversion

If the ease of changing calibers isn't enough to make the 23 attractive, I don't know what will be. This is a very interesting weapon - one gun, three calibers.

22. If we remember that .40 is the son of 10mm, its shortness is explained. When you're moving a 180-grain bullet at speeds south of 1,000 fps, it's going to slow down a bit when it comes to recoil.

You are talking about 400 ft/l of energy like some low end .357 Magnum loads. I mentioned above that this cycle is illegal in my state, and I think I can see why. The 10mm will do better than the .40 for hunting, but in terms of carry and personal defense (read more about safety caps), I can see the .40 being more useful than the 10mm.

The 10mm has very little recoil (at least the ones I shot), making it difficult to recover early. It makes it difficult to make the next shot in any kind of fast time setting. I know there are some of you who shoot 10mm regularly and are familiar with the damage, but for most shooters, this is a small number.

Now let's keep the link between the 10mm and the .40 S&W. The 10 will have more, but the light-arm .40 will also get your attention.

23 in .40 S&W can be a little handy on its own. I only shot one load, an FMJ 180 grain cut cone bullet from SIG Sauer at 990 fps. This is a great training load that will help you get a feel for shooting the .40. A good defense bullet will be more powerful. Your shooter will quickly learn the difference.

If you carry a .40, you should be well trained in several different loads to protect yourself. Don't fill up the newspaper and go home. A little more work is needed in the .40 action section due to its failure over the 9mm. But if you take the time, you'll do something not all shooters do—it's okay to carry a .40.

Now, don't think it's over .40. It takes a little time to get it right when shooting a small handgun like the Glock 23. However, it takes a lot of practice to master the weapon.

This seems fair considering the small number 23. I've said it before - Glocks are better than average-well.

The 23 is smaller than the 22, with a minus-two capacity compared to the 22. Therefore, it can be a good choice for a concealed weapon. Its standard capacity of 13 rounds makes it great for most situations, and its compact design strikes a delicate balance between full-sized and subcompact guns. If you carry, you have a smaller gun than full size, but you can use full magazines if you want - they can be a little sticky. However, it is a simple but reliable and accurate .40 sub gun model.
